OCR: He explains the increasing force and velocity of the water as a result of acceleration caused by gravity. But his understanding of gravity differs from ours. Leonardo inherited a concept of gravity defined as a force that attracts dense objects to the center of the world. This concept was inseparable from the theory that each of the four elements has its own level, or sphere, with earth, the heaviest, at the center of the world. This central core is surrounded by the sphere of water, then air, and then fire. Such was the makeup of the sublunary world.
